Scope note
Red dye produced from the hot water extraction of any of several tropical trees of the Caesalpinia genus. Its principal colorant is brasilin, a hydroxyanthraquinone. Used to dye textiles as early as the 12th century in Europe; the color is not lightfast and fades when heated.
